NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE

From The PRESIDENT

AS we rush into the new year, we surely cannot help but continue to feel anxious about what 2021 has in store for us. As we brace ourselves into another uncertain phase and time, we had to admit that the battle against COVID-19 is far from over. We are frantically searching for the light at the end of the tunnel, hoping for normalcy to return soon. The sporting world, industry, fraternity, athletes and officials and fans were deeply shaken, suffering greatly following the great social and economic impact the global pandemic has brought upon us. This includes the cancellation of many major sporting events and multi-sport Games around the world. We too were not spared as the ASEAN Para Games, the region’s biggest Para sporting extravaganza, became one of the biggest casualties. The 10th edition of the biennial Games, earlier planned in Manila, Philippines, had to be cancelled. After months of intensive preparations, the organisers and APSF had no choice but to call off the Games due to the worsening situation. It was an unprecedented situation which many had never imagined before, but the welfare of our athletes, officials and contingent takes priority over other matters. APSF remains steadfast in its efforts to protect the welfare, health and safety of our athletes and officials. To all NPCs, athletes, officials, contingents and the ASEAN Paralympic family in general, I wish to record my gratitude for all the support rendered during this trying times. My heartfelt thanks to the Philippines government, the ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (PHILAPGOC) and the city of Manila for putting in great efforts in their bid to deliver the 2020 ASEAN Para Games. I believe Manila would have been a magnificent host if not for the worsening situation caused by the pandemic.Let’s not look back but set our strides to collectively overcome whatever challenges that may cross our paths in the true spirit of “ASEAN Moving Together”. Let’s rebuild our strength and pray for the world to finally heal from these unfortunate circumstances so that our athletes will continue to inspire millions around the region. Preparations for 11th ASEAN Para Games 2021 in Hanoi are already underway. Let’s work hand in hand with the government, the city of Hanoi and the Vietnam ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (VIEAPGOC) to ensure a smooth and safe delivery of the Games come December 2021. To athletes and officials, keep your heads and spirits high, continue to train hard as, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the next three years will be a truly challenging period as you face a string of multi-sport Games – the ASEAN Para Games Hanoi 2021, 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou as well as the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia in 2023. On behalf of APSF Board of Governors, the Executive Committee, the Management and Members of the APSF secretariat, I wish everyone a good year ahead and may we all be blessed in good health and spirits during this trying period. Happy New Year to all! ASEAN MOVING TOGETHER!MAJ. GEN. OSOTH BHAVILAIPresidentASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF)
